Why is Pandi so Gassy???

Updated: May 1

The Surprising (and Stinky) Science of Giant Pandas

If you've read Pandi the Panda, you know our hero has a bit of a ... noisy habit. While Pandi likes to blame the wind or the birds, the truth is that real-life pandas are some of the gassiest animals in the kingdom!!

But why? Is it just for the laughs, or is there a scientific reason behind those "Pffffts" and "Toots"?

  1. The Bamboo Diet (The "Crunch, Munch" Reality)

Pandas are built like meat-eaters (carnivores), but they choose to eat like vegetarians. They spend about 12 to 16 hours a day eating bamboo. Because bamboo is incredibly fibrous and tough, a panda's digestive system has to work overtime to break it down.

When all that fiber sits in their tummy, it ferments. And what does fermentation create? Gas! Lots and lots of it.

  1. A Short Story about Tummies

Most plant-eaters have very long intestines to help digest grass and leaves. Pandas, however, have very short digestive tracks. This means the bamboo moves through them very

quickly. To get as much energy as possible in a short time, their gut bacteria works at lightning speed, creating air bubbles that eventually need an exit strategy.

  1. The "Panda Pffft" by Numbers

Did you know a healthy giant panda can poop up to 40 times a day? With that much "movement" happening, "tooting" is just part of the process. In the wild, scientists actually use the scent and frequency of these gasses to track how healthy a panda is!

  1. Why We Kept it in the Book

When we wrote Pandi the Panda, we wanted Pandi to feel like a real kid -- a little bit silly, a little bit grumpy, and occasionally, a little bit gassy.

Whether she's climbing over logs or peeking under leaves, Pandi's "toots" are a nod to the real biology of these amazing bears. It's nature's way of saying, "I'm full of bamboo!".
